Along with protein and fat, carbohydrates make up the three primary sources of energy for the body. Thus, a healthy level of carbohydrate in the daily diet is essential for one’s well-being. Although a healthy amount of carbohydrates in the diet is essential, certain individuals may prefer to reduce their carbohydrate intake by restricting their diet to a list of low carbohydrate foods.Various reasons including weight control, obesity treatments and even diabetes may contribute to this decision.

Choosing an individual’s diet from a list of low carbohydrate foods offers numerous health benefits. The most obvious one would be that low carb diets aid weight loss activities by reducing an individual s daily calorie consumption.Furthermore by choosing his/her diet from a list of low carbohydrate foods, an individual ensures a steady supply of proteins and vitamins to the body as many of these foods are rich sources of proteins and vitamins. Thus, it is particularly recommended for people suffering from health problems such as heart disease.

The list of low carbohydrate foods comprises of certain categories such as high protein, vegetable, fats and fruits. Meats such as chicken, beef and ham, fish including trout, salmon, and shrimp, nuts, for instance walnuts and macademia, cheese and eggs fill the high protein section of the list of low carbohydrate foods. Processed and canned meats along with nuts including peanuts and buckwheat is not recommended.

Vegetables would probably be the healthiest category in a list of low carbohydrate foods as vegetables are rich sources of vitamins, while being low on carbohydrates. Vegetables such as celery, cucumber, lettuce, broccoli, onion and cabbages are ideal although carrots, manioc, potatoes and sweet potatoes contain a considerable amount of carbohydrates and therefore, should be avoided.

Although fats are a vital part of one’s diet, they should be taken in moderation. Oils including olive, canola, coconut and walnut and products such as cream butter make up the oils or fats category in a list of low carbohydrate foods. Furthermore, fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, raspberries and strawberries should take a significant portion of one’s diet although dried fruits and fruit juice are not usually recommended.

Probably the healthiest decision one would ever make would be to choose his/her diet from a list of low carbohydrate food. However, it should always be remembered to balance the daily diet so the other necessary nutrients won’t be left out.
