One of the hottest trends in the cosmetic industry is mineral based makeup. Although it has been around for years, it has only recently become the makeup darling in the spotlight. It’s most popular form is a loose powder foundation that, when applied correctly, gives the wearer a flawless complexion. Because of the natural base, some experts claim that it is better for your skin than traditional makeup.
Today many cosmetic companies are providing unique forms of mineral makeup to keep up with the trend while making it affordable for everyone. Minerals are not limited to foundation, but are now appearing in eye shadows, lipstick and even mascara.
Because I have oily skin, a good powder is essential. So the mineral version was certainly appealing. My first purchase was from Physicians Formula. It came with the talc free powder inside an upright container with the brush attached for easy application. However, I did not get the “flawless” finish that I was expecting. Instead, it had the appearance of cheap powder that looked dry. So far, I was not impressed.
Next, I purchased the Mary Kay line after a makeover demonstration. With the first wave of the brush across my cheek, I could tell that I was going to like it because the flawlessness instantly appeared. Now we’re talking. As days passed I quickly discovered that there is a fine line between a proper application and being overly done. If I applied a little too much, it began to look cakey, even making my large pores look larger. Not to mention, that I would also go through sneezing fits from breathing in the fine powder after every application. So wearing this foundation meant proceeding with caution and a constant reminder that it is only good in small doses.
Flipping through the pages of Lucky magazine, I found a sample for Clinique’s Almost Powder Makeup foundation. The amount on the sample card seemed slight and I figured I would need to stretch it a bit to cover my entire face. But to my surprise, a little went a long way. Because it is a cross between a pressed powder and a cream based foundation, it glided on easily and evened out my skin tone without looking heavy. I was also impressed by the staying power, which is a huge challenge with oily skin.
I’m sure there are plenty of great brands of mineral makeup on the market. But for the time being, I am happy with the Clinique line.
