Tiffany & Co was originally started by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in 1837 as a stationery and fancy goods store. Back then, the store was called Tiffany & Young. Their prices were non-negotiable which was unheard of for merchantiles in that time period. Their first day’s sales only brought in $4.98. Today’s sales are much different from the sales of the past. Charles Tiffany took over the company in 1853 and changed its name to Tiffany & Co. The sterling silver that was patented in the US today was first used by Tiffany’s. Tiffany & Co was commissioned to present a silver pitcher to President Abraham Lincoln for his first inauguration and the president gave his wife a Tiffany & Co pearl encrusted silver bracelet to commemorate the occasion.
Charles Tiffany bought the largest, finest fancy yellow diamond in the world in the 1870s, making history in his business. The Tiffany Setting was first used in 1886, once Charles Tiffany came into possession of some of the French Crown Jewels and it became the first 6 prong diamond solitaire band setting. Charles Tiffany became known as The King of Diamonds. Over the years Tiffany & Co has expanded into Europe and is also in the famous Ginza District in Tokyo. Tiffany’s is a name known the world over. 15 decades later, a specialty store is completely different.
Tiffany & Young used the original light blue boxes. The boxes and colors were carefully selected and used for all advertising, catalogs and shipments. The first thing that pops out at you today on the Tiffy & Co website is their logo: a light blue box wrapped in a white bow. How many diamonds, pearls,rubies, and ect. you have is not what makes a person special. There are many knockoffs of Tiffany jewelry, but there is nothing in the world compared to wearing a genuine piece of Tiffany & Co jewelry.
